It's official--our boys are back on Grand River Academy's campus for the 2017 - 2018 school year! Athletes who are taking part in the fall sports season arrived Friday and spent the long weekend training as a team and honing their skills as athletes while today marks the official Registration Day for all students. Faculty and staff have been busy preparing for a great start to the school year (this even includes building a firepit and outdoor volleyball court!) as well, including some new faces and familiar faces in new roles.
We are excited to welcome Mrs. Amy Roth as the Dean of Students. Beginning this July, she's had the opportunity to meet some of GRA's students during our summer programs and is looking forward to seeing everyone. She brings a wealth of experience with her, having spent years in boarding schools, which began as a student at a single-gender school (Emma Willard School) in Troy, NY. After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis with a Master's Degree in Social Work, she was most recently at the Hun School of Princeton as the Dean of Resident Students. If you see her, her husband or three children, along with their three dogs on campus, be sure to stop and say hello!
This summer GRA also welcomed Mr. Greg Ladd as the Director of International Admission, along with his wife Mami and two sons onto campus. He is bringing his teaching experience along with international living and admission work as he meets and connects with GRA international families. Also joining the GRA faculty is Mr. Jacob Bessman. From Northeast Ohio, he's looking forward to teaching math and living in Mastin Hall as a dorm parent.
Seeing familiar faces in new roles this school year include Mr. David Crowell as our Director of Teaching and Learning. Mr. Crowell will spearhead the pedagogy and programming on campus. Ms. Kari Wetzel is the Director of Admission and you can reach her office with any enrollment-related questions. Biology Department faculty member Mrs. Katy Studer, Social Studies faculty member Ms. Amanda Jennings and Chinese language instruction faculty member Mrs. Sheila Liu have taken over the college placement office in the Knowledge Commons and are waiting to welcome students as they continue to provide the individualized college search process GRA is known for. Another familiar face students will see in Green Hall is Mrs. Dylan Crowell as she's teaching the 12th grade English class.
Mr. Thomas Polak and Ms. Amanda Jennings are returning as Student Life Coordinators. They are once again planning some fun activities that the entire school community enjoyed during the second half of last year. From activities off campus to enhanced on-campus programming, they have a variety of happenings that every student can partake.
Enjoying student life activities to engaged learning in the classroom, there are a wealth of opportunities for every learning at GRA. Fishing in the Grand River, running along the shores of Lake Erie, to engaging in video game battles in the dorm commons, where will you find your son these first few weeks of school?
