Meditation for teenage boys? While Grand River Academy students are not performing yoga everyday, teaching mindfulness and meditation has become a daily practice within the Foundations Learning Program.
What is mindfulness?
If you google the term, you'll find the definition as "a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique." This is achieved by practicing meditation. The deep breathing exercises and focusing techniques learned through meditation can improve performance within the classroom.
How does mindfulness help in the classroom?
By practicing mindfulness regularly, it helps to lower stress, regulate emotions, and improve focus. This is especially helpful for boys - and those who have ADD/ADHD or Executive Function Disorder. It can lead to reduced disruptions in the classroom and better coping mechanisms within the students.
Foundations Learning Program teachers Mrs. Shannon Farrell and Mrs. Nikki Ngom have been using this method with students with noticeable results. As ADHD Coach Jonathan Carroll shares advice to families exploring the various ways to cope with ADD/ADHD: "If it works for you, then stick with it! More specifically, don't be afraid to try new things or combine treatments. Managing one's ADD/ADHD isn't a one size fits all approach, but one that requires us to identify a routine for success."
