The Grand River Academy Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to appoint Tony Tucker the next Head of School. Mr. Tucker is an accomplished independent school leader and admissions professional. He will become the Head of School beginning June 1, 2020. Tucker, who has been the Director of Admission at Grand River Academy since November 2018, will succeed Tim Oditt, who informed the board earlier this month of his need to step down from his position to be closer to family.
"Grand River Academy is a special mission-driven institution with amazing students and a phenomenal staff," Oditt said. "Jennifer and I are saddened by our need to move on but know that Tony will do a tremendous job moving the school forward into the future."
Board chair and GRA alumni parent, Sharon Tiknis, stated, "For nearly two years, Tim's leadership has brought Grand River Academy to a strong position of growth on all levels. The GRA community is truly grateful for Tim's commitment to GRA and all that he will continue to accomplish through May 31, 2020. As the Board considered the best options in appointing a new Head of School - a dynamic leader who would continue to advance our mission, ensure a smooth transition, and a leader who will inspire the Grand River Academy community to help us grow - Tony Tucker was clearly the best candidate to take the helm."
Tucker has a fantastic understanding of admissions, school business, and the day to day operations of educational leadership. During his career in education, Tucker has been committed to creating new co-curricular activities, student leadership roles, and experiential learning opportunities that have inspired personal and academic growth amongst countless students for the past few decades.
"I am honored to receive this prestigious opportunity to be the next Head of School at Grand River Academy," Tucker said. "Tim Oditt has done a tremendous job of leading GRA over the past two years, and I consider myself fortunate to have been able to call him my colleague, mentor, and friend. I look forward to continuing along his pathway of achievement and look forward to leading this great institution to unmatched levels of greatness for years to come."
Tucker, a former professional basketball player who also served as an NBA scout, has had a long and successful career working at boarding schools. He formerly worked in Admissions for prominent schools such as St. Andrews School (DE), Flint Hill School, and Mercersburg Academy. Additionally, Tucker served as a key contributor towards the creation and development of the IMG Basketball Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Most recently, Tucker has worked as the Director of Admission at Grand River Academy.
Tiknis noted, "Since joining the Academy's leadership team Tony has made significant contributions to the advancement of the school. His success over the past 20 years in building innovative organizations to activate young people's potential is already evident in his work at Grand River Academy. The Board of Trustees is enthusiastic about our continued partnership with Tony."
Tiknis added appreciation to Board Vice-Chair Blair Campomizzi and John Farber of Resource Group 175 for their significant assistance in guiding the work of the board.
