Grand River Academy elects first female Board Chair
Austin Farber

Grand River Academy is pleased to announce Sharon Tiknis P'08 as the first woman to Chair the Board of Trustees.

Tiknis joined the Board of Trustees in 2007 and has served on the Advancement, Executive, and Finance Committees at various times. She also served as the Chair of the Head of School Search Committee in 2018. Tiknis brings a long history of leadership, experience, and expertise in the nonprofit sector to her new position. Tiknis is Executive Vice President and East Division Manager for The Alford Group, a national consulting firm for not-for-profit organizations. Throughout her professional career, Tiknis has held senior-level positions at the Alley Theatre in Houston, the Honolulu Museum of Arts, the College of Communications and Fine Arts at Central Michigan University, and several other prestigious institutions and organizations.

"I'm humbled to serve as Board Chair. I believe in Grand River Academy and our mission," Tiknis said. "The Academy's rigorous academic program and unique educational model is transformational and prepares our students for a vibrant future beyond high school."

In addition to her professional career, Tiknis has been an active volunteer in several communities. She is a recipient of the Spirit of Detroit City Council Award, the Mayor's Award for Outstanding Service in Houston, and the Houston YWCA Outstanding Young Woman Award.

"It is an exciting time for Grand River Academy!" Head of School Tim Oditt said. "Sharon brings a wealth of knowledge about GRA with her to the position and a depth of experience in the nonprofit world. I am thrilled to have her on board and look forward to advancing the Academy under her leadership."

Tiknis was elected to the position after Mr. Steve Schoneman P'07, who has been the Board Chair since 2013, stepped down from the role at the spring Board Meeting. During his time as Board Chair, Schoneman devoted his time and energy to the Academy. His unwavering devotion was evident during the 2018 spring semester when Schoneman took on the role of interim headmaster for five months. Schoneman will remain a member of the Board of Trustees and continue to help advance the Academy.

"I enjoyed my time as Board Chair and found it to be a very rewarding experience," Schoneman said. "I'm sure that Sharon will help guide the Academy to a prosperous future."

Grand River Academy looks forward to the future endeavors we will have with Sharon Tiknis at the helm!
