The Boarding School Experience in the Midwest: Part 1

When you hear of boarding schools, you might immediately think of the East Coast. Grand River Academy, however, is located in the northeastern corner of Ohio and has a long history of providing educational opportunities to students since 1831. It is with this rich history and convenience of location to both the East and West coasts that make GRA a great option for boys looking to change their environment. From the natural resources, welcoming community, and a quiet, rural, and safe setting, there are many great reasons for studying in this area.

Here in Northeast Ohio, there are plenty of offerings to keep your son busy. This is seen with our close proximity to Lake Erie, which boasts destinations like Geneva on the Lake and the Historic Ashtabula Harbor to our namesake - the Grand River. This offers swimming trips, canoeing, and many ways to teach our students - from History, Science, to English Language Learning opportunities.

Alongside our numerous water-centered activities, we also are gifted with a beautiful park system boasting numerous walking trails. This includes the Western Reserve Greenway Trail that stretches 44 scenic miles through Ashtabula and Trumbull counties, which is utilized by students and faculty alike, especially with our local access point here in Austinburg, just steps away from campus.

Another thing that brings photographers and enthusiasts from all around no matter the time of year; our beautiful covered bridges that depict a real touch of just what Ohio is, a historical conglomeration of our past and how it has impacted us today. A real-time history lesson and scenic trip all tied into one package. This is a favorite spot for hiking during activities or trips for Photography class.

Our environment is just one of the many reasons for studying in the Midwest at Grand River Academy. This is the first in a series of blogs highlighting the area and how GRA uses it for academic, emotional, and social growth for its young men.
