There’s not time to have the winter blues at Grand River Academy! While the snow and cold weather have just arrived on campus, it hasn’t hampered us in any way from a strong kick-off to the holiday season with many volunteer and giving opportunities for our students, faculty, and staff. Here at GRA, we use the winter season in the best possible way - as an opportunity for giving.
I think we all know that feeling...when it is cold outside and all you would like to do is curl up with a blanket and a good book. Thankfully, our faculty, staff, and students pushed that thinking aside to spend two hours in the cold on purpose! Ringing the Salvation Army Bell to raise funds for local residents is not the traditional way to spend a Sunday, but our students and staff passed the time speaking with local residents, collecting donations, and wishing everyone well in the holiday season, all while supporting a wonderful charity.
The pediatric unit at our local hospital has also had some festive visitors from GRA, as our students visit multiple times each week to share holiday joy with the patients. It's heartwarming to see our young men interact with these young children as they pick out a toy and wish the patient well. Additionally, GRA's Big Brother Big Sister volunteers made tree ornaments with their "littles" at Austinburg Elementary, while fellow schoolmates helped Austinburg Nursing & Rehabilitation Center decorate the facility and serve their holiday dinner. Students even "adopted" a local child for the holidays, so Christmas morning would be extra bright.
Grand River Academy itself was also a recipient of the season's spirit of giving, as seen on November 29, 2016 - Giving Tuesday. Our goal of raising $5,000 in support of GRA's annual giving program, The Blue & White Fund, was smashed with the help of you and the many other faithful supporters of GRA's mission and students. We also had the aid of Austin the Eagle who showcased, alongside students and alumni, the updates and renovated spaces brought to campus by generous donations in recent years. As we show our students what a culture of giving can be, we would like to thank you for your great example of philanthropy to those very same students.
