Chinese Lessons and Games at the After School Discovery Program

We never quite know what we will discover when Grand River Academy's listening and speaking class visits Ashtabula County's After School Discovery Program!  Today's visit was filled with Chinese lessons and games.

Below, the students are learning how to count to 10 in and say their primary colors in Chinese.

Following the lesson, Haokun ;17 played Hangman with his table to help reinforce the Chinese colors.  Yunyuang '16 and Haokun  '17 also had a contest with their table to see who could pick the correct colored marker out of the box when they heard the color spoken in Chinese.

Yingbo '16 & Lizhong 'enjoyed playing Dominos and Jenga with the students

Lastly, but certainly not least, Yingbo '16 had such a fun time playing twister with the students.  Some how he managed to remain undefeated

It was another very fun and exciting day with the children at After School Discovery.

Grand River Academy's first year listening and speaking class were able to teach the children at Ashtabula County's After School Discovery Program how to speak in Chinese!

The children's first lesson was to learn how to say 'Hello (Ni hao) & Good-bye (Zai jian).  The children certainly learned quickly how to pronounce and use the words correctly however, when trying to write the word in Chinese, well that was a little more difficult!

Tim was teaching the children how to write their name in Chinese.  b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_1147.JPG

After learning how to say both Hello (Ni hao)  and Good bye (Zai jian), the students also learned 'Please' (Qing) and 'Thank you' (Xie Xie).

Next week, we will be helping the children learn how to count from 1-10 in Chinese as well as learning how to say the primary colors in Chinese.

We always have such a fun time and discover new things when we get together with the children during the After School Discovery Program.

During today's After School Discovery Program the Primary School children taught the Grand River Academy students how to make ties, flowers and wallets out of Duct Tape as well as how to play the traditional game of Checkers and Battleship, however the GRA boys taught the children how to tie their ties!

Jay '16 is making his first Duct Tape tie.  This particular tie is reversible with one side being blue and the other is purple.

Vince '17 was in deep thought trying to figure out the location of his partner's ships in the game of Battleship!

Tim '16 loves playing Connect Four with the children!

It was another great time at After School Discovery as the students were busy either playing a game, making something out of the colorful Duct Tape or just chatting with each other.  Next week Jay '16 will show the children how to make birds out of a sheet of paper.

It was another fun and exciting time at After School Discovery for Grand River Academy's first year international students.

Together, the students learned how to make play dough by mixing 1 cup hair conditioner and 2 cups corn starch.  They were all amazed at how the wet and dry ingredients quickly came together to form a soft pliable ball that easily formed into different shapes.

Following the craft, the primary aged children asked the GRA students to share a story with them, so James '16 told a very popular Chinese story to the children.  He began the story in Chinese and then translated as he continued.  The students loved the story about the pigs and the wolf  (similar to our Three Little Pigs story) so much that they all applauded James at the end!

There were 3 separate tables of children, so the Academy students divided up to help assist in the making of play dough.

The children loved the story and applauded at the end :)

Grand River Academy's first year international students have joined together with Ashtabula County's After School Discovery Program

GRA students will be participating every Tuesday in the ASDP located at the new Ashtabula City Schools' campus.  The ESL first year listening and speaking class is grateful for the opportunity to participate in fun activities with the elementary school aged children. The students anticipate joining in a variety of academic enrichment, recreational and cultural activities that will help in supporting learning and social development. It is exciting to see how life and social skills, such as cooperation, teamwork, and problem solving are fostered in this caring and welcoming environment.

Today, the students worked together to make a favorite afternoon snack; Rice Krispy treats.

James '17 carefully reads the recipe while the other students work together in mixing and making the treats.

The best part of making the treats is eating them!

After enjoying the afternoon snack, the students joined in a few games together; Connect Four and indoor bowling.

And of course it's always nice to just sit around and chat!

Last week, March 18th, was our first day participating in the After School Discovering Program.  The students decided to join together in a game of basketball.  Captains were chosen then teams were picked and the game began!
