Grand River Academy offers many unique opportunities for our young men to grow and learn while on campus. One thing we can't do though is "steal" their family's secret recipe for their favorite birthday treat. But, we sure do come mighty close!
This past year, a new tradition was born to help celebrate that special day for students, faculty, staff, and our faculty children. Each month, the faculty and staff sign birthday notes for all those in the Grand River Academy family who has a birthday. These signs are then posted by their dorm room, office, or classroom door for all to see.
The second part of this tradition involves tasty treats! Chef Megan Cabatingan whips together a unique cake or dessert recipes for the birthday celebrants each and every month. These have included bubble gum cake, "death by chocolate" dessert, s'mores campfire cake, berry vanilla, and many more delicious surprises. The birthday boys gather around the lighted candles and the birthday treat to be the first ones to call dibs on the coveted corner piece!
Celebrating your 13th, 14th, or even 18th birthday away from home can be a unique experience for our boys, but boarding school is about changing your environment, activating your potential and creating new memories. I know from personal experience, and that of my classmates here, that our reflections back to high school are made of traditions like our monthly birthday surprises. When friends and those who led us along our educational journey showed they cared and celebrated the small but important milestones, it made a large difference in out outlook on daily life.
