Alumni Spotlight Series Featuring Jon Rowley '83

Success comes in many forms, as seen with this week's Alumni Spotlight Jon Rowley '83!

Following graduation from Grand River Academy in 1983, Jon attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and Ohio State University before finishing his schooling in Engineering Mathematics at the University of Arizona, a campus he fell in love with while visiting family one summer. Before he could finish college, "I jumped into my family’s new business in Tucson where for the next 26 years, I operated mobile two-way systems, designed and manufactured wireless telemetry systems and Location-Based Services using GPS over cellular networks and approximate locating over RFID."

Then, in 2014 Jon joined a Phoenix based company as a hardware engineer after selling one of his applications on monitoring driver behaviors. In 2015, that company was acquired by Spireon where Jon is now the Senior Hardware Engineer helping to manage over 2.4 million active vehicles for communications and tracking.

Currently residing in Tuscon, Arizona with his family, Jon spends his spare time involved in the Arizona Land Rover Owner Association, serving as Regional Commissioner for a local youth soccer group after 16 years as a U.S. Soccer referee, and is also now a proud golf enthusiast!

When asked about his thoughts on his time at GRA, Jon remarked, "I’m grateful for the time I spent at Grand River Academy and will contribute part of my success to the individual attention I received, providing me the motivation to continue my learning. GRA was also where I was lucky enough to be introduced to computers in Mr. Antoline’s computer lab with Commodore 64 and Apple IIe desktops."

Jon visited campus this past December with his family to see many of our updated spaces and learn about what our students are up to now. While we no longer have Commodore 64 computers, he was impressed with the renovations to Green Hall with the Knowledge Commons and our Productive Growth Center in what Jon affectionately remembered as the Canteen in the basement of Shepard Hall.
